I noticed the recent backlash about Burna boy showing up topless to one of the Glo Slide ‘n’ Bounce shows. I understand Nigerians have a strong sense of what is right or wrong but haba! Why? There was a lot of talk about him being a role model and other blah blah blah...
The truth is let’s leave our religious beliefs in the churches, mosques or babalawo house [as it applies to you]. Why hassle a young man who is trying hard to make something of himself [legitimately]. Where have you parents/people been since the corruption scourge of the 80’s? Why are we so morally uptight considering the state of the nation [which we never really talk about]? We are content to sit in the squalor of our situation, turn a blind eye to thieving political, religious and traditional leaders but call fire and brimstone on a young cat who has decided to make a honest living.
We must understand the intricacies of the entertainment business [entertainment being the key word]. People, its showbiz and in showbiz, they show off. You must create an individual style to get a cult following. Most entertainers are eccentrics. We enjoy their music yet we castigate their excesses. We have to understand that artistes need a certain mindset to be creative; in that regard we must pardon their excesses. They ENTERTAIN so whatever helps make them more fascinating is for me an okay. I remember way back in 2004 when Naeto C started the fad of wearing Aboki hats on casual smarts. I am sure some people must have said something back then but it eventually caught on and voila it was everywhere.
Parents please if you’re seeking role models for your kids, I would advise you to look away from the entertainment business. Nigerians let’s keep obeying the clarion call but let’s restrict it to areas that would move our nation forward and create a better environment for the coming generation.
Whether Burna shows up in a singlet, a dress or topless, please how that one take affect the price of garri?
